City to New Yorkers: "You Don't Hafta Go Home, But You Can't Stay Here..."

martini[1].jpg
As a College student in Boston, I remember bemoaning the fact that my beloved but a bit too stuffy for my tastes University town insisted on halting mine and my friends good time at 2am. "Someday we will live in New York City," we declared, "where we will all star in lavish Broadway musicals, and be free to close down any bar of our choice at 4am." So we arrived in the land of the free, and the tipsy, and drink till 4am we did, until we turned around 26, and slowly realized that even on a raging night out, we still seemed to end up home, and in bed, at 2am.

Even though its been a couple of years since I enjoyed the perks of the 4am last call, I still vehemently defend a New Yorker's God given right to drink themselves silly until a ridiculously late hour of the night. Think of all the waiters and bartenders who don't even get out of work until midnight! Where are they supposed to go? Home? I think not...

But the Community Boards of my fine City don't seem to agree with me. While the State Liquor Authority paid little heed to such groups in the past, increasing pressure from Community Organizations have stalled new liquor licenses for any business looking to stay open past 2am on weeknights, or 3am on weekends. While they can't do much (yet) about establishments who already hold liquor licenses with 4am close times, it looks as though expiring leases and gentrification of neighborhoods could have us tip toeing our way to becoming a City where 4am last calls are a thing of the past.
