How Sustainable is Your Sushi?

While traditional seafood restaurants are likely to be mindful of the sustainability of their fish, the same cannot be said about sushi eateries, says the New York Post. Data regarding source, and whether fish are farmed or wild can be found on the menus of better seafood restaurants, but sushi restaurants often do not have such info available for diners.

Three conservation groups have guides in the works that will educate consumers on the sustainability of popular sushi offerings. One such guide, published by The Environmental Defense Fund, lists the following as the worst choices to make when seeking sustainable sushi:

Bluefin Tuna (populations have dropped 90% in 30 years), Monkfish, Red Snapper, and Freshwater Eel.

The best choices? Farmed Abalone, Albacore Tuna, and Farmed Arctic Char.
