No End in Sight for High Grocery Bills?

It seems like just last year, my only concerns over paying too much for my groceries were the times I decided to splurge and do all my weekly shopping at Whole Foods. Then, one day, milk seemed to suddenly get really expensive, even at my local reasonably priced market. "Did I actually just spend 6 bucks for a half gallon of organic milk?" I found myself asking my husband. We chalked it up to crazy NYC prices.

Last week my beloved neighborhood bagel shop posted a letter of both warning and apology to their customers. Due to the sharply rising cost of wheat, bagels which had previously sold for 75 cents would soon be priced at a dollar each, or even more, and that's before they add butter or cream cheese.

I know that talks of recession have been looming for months now, but as a New Yorker, rising gas prices are a problem I discuss with my suburban friends and family (we don't own a car), and we live in a market that has yet to be too negatively affected by the real estate crisis affecting most of the country.

But we do buy food. Every day, in fact. And from what I have been reading, prices aren't going down anytime soon.

There is an excellent op-ed piece in the Times by financial expert Paul Krugman, which sheds some not-too-shocking light on the problem. Its not too long of a read, which should give you plenty of time afterwards to decide what you are having besides steak for dinner tonight.
