Passover Treat # 1: Passover Coke

2007-05-25t064900z_01_nootr_rtridsp_2_business-glaceau-coke-dc[1].jpg Passover is upon us, and with it comes a few treats in the culinary marketplace.

Passover treat #1: Passover Coke
Also sometimes referred to as Mexican Coke here in NYC, Passover Coke is Classic Coke, reformulated to meet Jewish Passover requirements that prohibit the consumption of chametz (processed grains, including corn.) Since High Fructose Corn Syrup is a forbidden Passover ingredient, those smart corporate types at Coca Cola make a limited batch of Passover Coke each year, sweetened instead with more costly refined cane sugar or sucrose (from sugar beets.) The precious bounty is shipped to major metropolitan areas with large Jewish populations, and the Passover Coke frenzy begins, with fans driving far distances to obtain the much sought after beverage.

What's the big whoop you ask? The taste. Since 1985, Americans have been drinking a reformulated version of Classic Coke, which previously was sweetened with cane sugar. Coke enthusiasts swear by the crisper and lighter taste of sugar sweetened Coke, preferring it to the cloying sweetness typical of any HFCS sweetened beverage. Wanna try some for yourself? Better get to the store quickly...Passover Coke flies off the shelves faster than you can say Manischewitz.
