The New York Times reports today that supermarkets are on the decline in many areas of NYC. Hardest hit are the counties of Queens and Kings (Brooklyn), with mostly minority and low-income neighborhoods seeing the shuttering of many neighborhood supermarkets. Blamed on rising rents and low profit margins, many former supermarkets have been converted to big-name banks and drug stores, leaving over 750,000 New Yorkers with a more than 5 block trek to the nearest operating market selling fresh foods and produce.
The problem is not exclusive to poor neighborhoods. My own tony neighborhood of Park Slope, Brooklyn has seen the closure of a D'Agostino's which will be replaced by a Bank of America. While an over 5 block trek with a granny cart is just a slight inconvenience for me, our elderly and disabled neighbors are facing longer bus trips and increased taxi fares...further challenging all family's budgets during the current crisis of rising food and gasoline costs.
