The Price, Please - By Order of Law

New York restaurants are still reeling from this past summer's ban on trans fats. Couple that with the new NYC law forcing chain restaurants to post calorie counts, regulations that require posting the warnings of undercooked meats and eggs, and disclosure of nuts and other allergens - and restaurants have a lot to worry about before your food ever hits a frying pan.

A newly proposed Nassau county law would add one more rule to the growing list of laws hitting a menu near you. Harvey B. Levinson, Chairman of Nassau County's Board of Assessors, has proposed a law which would require restaurants to divulge the price of specials not indicated on the menu. "I'm sure that at one time or another you have been enticed by a waiter or waitress into ordering the special of the day, only to discover that it was really the price that was special.", Levinson told the New York Times.

How does this proposed measure add up with you? We think that while it would be nice to know the price ahead of time, we are perfectly capable of asking the question ourselves. Besides, don't you usually assume that a special of the day is going to be priced in the upper reaches of a restaurant's average prices?
